Micro Hydro System Case Study: Blairgowrie
Ashgrove Mill is a micro hydro near to Blairgowrie in Perthshire. Proterra Energy carried out the feasibility, design, planning and installation of a 50 kW archimedes screw.
This type of turbine uses a 2,000 year old idea and is well suited to sites with limited head availability but high flows. The flow of water drives the turbines shaft which turns a generator producing clean, renewable energy.
So as to minimise the impact of the scheme on the listed mill site, the scheme used existing infrastructure as much as possible. The mill pit which still remains was isolated and protected.
