Micro Hydro Scheme Case Study: Altnaharra

Introduction

Clebrig is a micro hydro scheme close to Altnaharra in the north of Scotland.

Proterra Energy was contacted by the Client following a referral from the design engineer. Proterra Energy took on the project and carried it through the final design stages and construction. The scheme was commissioned in 2016 with a power output of 90kW.

The scheme was grid constrained until 2020 and so Proterra Energy developed a log drying system that uses excess generation to speed up the drying process. This ensures that the excess energy is used on site, linking energy production with consumption and retaining the benefit of this power locally.
