Glen Lochay Renewable Energy Project

Introduction

We were contacted by the Client’s engineers back in 2025 to design an offgrid system to suit the development of a remote property on Glen Lochay Estate. The property was multi-use, with accommodation, meeting rooms and garages, and would need power all year round.

Glen Lochay Renewable Energy: Sustainable Power in the Highlands

Our Feasibility Study identified a local hydro resource, but unfortunately it was tied up with the large Breadalbane Hydroelectric network, meaning water was not always available in the nearby burns. Discussions with local Estate staff identified a wind corridor above the new building and so a combination of wind and solar were designed, with battery storage, to provide power through the summer and the winter. A small backup generator was integrated with the system and located in a remote barn.

The system was installed through the summer of 2026 and is currently operational, providing power to the building teams as they finish off phase 1 of the development. It has been developed with expansion in mind should the Estate develop the centre further as part of their wider plans for working with and protecting the land.
