Taking Off-Grid On-Grid: The Continuing Journey

Off-grid energy isn’t what you think!

What do you picture when you hear ‘off-grid’? Bet it’s some remote bothy or cabin, people washing in the river and making coffee over a fire.

But the reality is that off-grid is more common and more normal in Scotland than you may think. Some sites are miles from the nearest grid connection. Others are a few hundred metres away, but that’s often enough to make off-grid a better option.

As well as the traditional remote sites, far away from anything, we’re seeing three main types now:

  • New builds where grid connection costs are prohibitive, especially when paired with renewable ambitions. Sometimes it’s easier to start with off grid from scratch.
  • Properties or businesses wanting to install renewables to manage their electricity costs but facing significant upgrade costs. We design systems that sit alongside existing supply without connecting to it – renewable generation without the costly grid upgrade.
  • Power security seekers who regularly suffer grid outages affecting their business or lives, or who are concerned about energy network volatility (recent events only amplify this).

What are the benefits of off-grid energy systems?

Proterra Energy off grid systems scotland

Off-grid systems vary hugely. We’ve small 250W hydro schemes powering remote electric gates to 400kWh, 200kW systems powering in effect whole villages. One commercial site dropped from 2,000 litres of diesel per month to just 50 litres in year two after we replaced five generators with a hybrid off-grid system using solar and hydro.

The key? Starting with proper energy assessment, understanding electrical loads then designing holistic systems using solar, wind, hydro, battery storage and backup generators where needed. Getting battery sizing right is critical; it’s the heart of any off grid system.

Modern lithium batteries are smart; they communicate with inverters constantly and monitor their own health. Coupled with remote monitoring, we can spot trends before they become issues and often provide support without site visits.

Off-grid is not a backwards move but is about energy independence, reliability and control in an increasingly volatile world.
