Hydro Business Rates Scotland: Are New 50kW+ Schemes at Risk?

Keeping Hydro In the News

Important Update On Hydro Business Rates in Scotland

Proterra Energy recently joined Alba Energy, a group of hydro owners who have come together to share news and information about their schemes, helping each other learn about new developments and, where necessary, to try to bring about change. With access to over 80 hydro schemes in one form or another we hope to be able to contribute to the group and to offer support where required.

Once such area Alba Energy is working on is the continuing discussion over hydro business rates that seem to adversely affect hydro scheme owners / operators over other renewable energy systems such as wind and solar. This is a very complex subject and we don’t have enough ink in our printer to explain or add to it here. Suffice to say, something needs to be done. From our perspective a couple of the larger hydro schemes we’d like to develop with our Clients are in jeopardy of being cancelled because the potential for high business rates being applied makes the projects unviable.

From a wider perspective it means across Scotland that new hydro, above 50kW, is very unlikely to be built. Fingers crossed there is a resolution to this that brings hydro back in line with other renewables systems.
