Glen Hinnisdal
Proterra Energy was employed to carry out the feasibility for a micro-hydro scheme in Glen Hinnisdal on Skye.
Due to the incised nature of the burn and considering the elevation head and flow availability, a 15kW scheme was identified as the best option and one that would minimise environmental disturbance. The scheme was built by Proterra Energy and commissioned in 2013.
Due to the steepness of the river course, a turgo turbine was chosen. The turbine house was located discreetly beneath a steep section of waterfalls and given a turf roof to minimise its visual impact. Proterra Energy provides the major maintenance and servicing support for the scheme and it continues to operate efficiently and produce high yields.
