Evanton Remote Cabin Offgrid Energy System

Introduction

Proterra Energy was approached by an existing Client with a 500kW hydro scheme for whom we provide maintenance services. Several years before they had built a small cabin in forestry on a remote part of the farm and had installed a small offgrid system to power it, including a small water heating system and frost guard heating. It was powered by a solar array some 100 meters distant in a field.

What now for Evanton’s remote cabin offgrid energy system?

The system was malfunctioning and the Client was no longer able to get support from the remote supplier / installer and so asked if we could support them.

We replaced the old inverter and battery system which had failed and installed a Victron 5kVA inverter / charger along with new batteries and a new power management system that would prevent the over-discharge of the batteries.

The solar array (which was not properly earthed) was grounded correctly so passersby didn’t get an unexpected zap of the frame, which was at times noted to be live.

This year we provided information on a suitable generator to add to the system as the Client increases their use into the winter months when the solar is not able to provide full power. A small wind turbine was considered by the Client but given the cabin’s location in a clearing in forestry this was not suitable.

Renewable energy products used:

Multiplus II 5000/48/70, 250/70 Charge Controller, 2 x Pylon US2000C Batteries
