In December 2025 we completed the installation of a hybrid wind and solar system on a refurbished property at Castletown in Caithness. The brief from the Client was a system that could make the best use of the resources available for the site and, following recent prolonged power cuts in the area, had the ability to operate autonomously to the grid.
We designed a system with a 3 kW wind turbine and 8 kW of solar, both feeding through an offgrid capable system with 31 kWhr of battery storage (which can / may be extended at a later date). The system uses the grid as backup, only pulling on power from the grid if the renewable generation cannot keep up with demand. The refurbished property uses electric heating, minimising the use of fossil fuels on the site. The system is fully autonomous and can be remotely managed if the Client is not on site.
The system was commissioned and run offgrid immediately before Christmas 2025 and final witnessing carried out by SSEN in the second week of January 2026 made it fully operational.
