Kilchoman Distillery’s Pioneering Net Zero Journey
Maturation Warehouses (Off-Grid System)
A containerised off-grid system was designed, built and delivered to the site, as extending the grid to the remote location was prohibitively expensive.
The bespoke solar-powered system provides power to remote warehouses for safety and fire security systems, as well as charging an electric forklift.
Solar generation is optimised through integrated battery storage and backed up by a fully automated diesel generator. The system is expandable, with plans to increase generation and battery storage as Warehouses 2 (built) and 3 (planning permission granted) come online.

Main Distillery Complex (Solar Array 1)
A review of energy usage at the main distillery complex was carried out in 2023, followed by the installation of a 50 kW roof-mounted solar array on an existing warehouse (header image). The system outperformed its projections by nearly 20% in its first full year of operation.

Main Distillery Complex (Solar Array 2 and 3 – Export Management)
An export management system was designed by Proterra Energy and approved by the DNO (Distribution Network Operator), allowing the distillery to install an additional 50 kW of solar generation, despite local network constraints and microgeneration thresholds.
Two 25 kW roof-mounted arrays were installed in summer 2025. The orientation of these arrays was chosen to capitalise on late afternoon sunshine, maximising the overall solar generation window.
Annual Generation (estimated): 45,000 kWh
Energy Monitoring
An energy monitoring system was designed and installed at the distillery. Monitoring figures have shown how local generation has reduced energy bills, but also, importantly, how the distillery uses its energy.
This data has resulted in the distillery investigating how they use energy and how it can be recovered from production processes. If progressed, this next project will look at partitioning energy use on-site and powering the distillery locally, independent of the grid.
