Offgrid Energy Systems for Aquaculture: Maorach Beag

Introduction

We’ve had a little resurgence of Aquaculture related projects looking for renewable energy systems. In both cases we have / are looking at containerised offgrid systems to provide power to the sites. Interestingly, both sites are containerised for different but equally relevant or applicable reasons.

Offgrid energy systems for aquaculture: a good option for remote sites

In the first scheme, which was installed and commissioned in May 2026 at Maorach Beag, the site already had a container onsite with space in it, and whilst there was grid power across the other side of the main road, the cost of getting it installed was prohibitive.

So we designed and build a small offgrid system in a cabinet, suitable for the requirements of the site. We were able to do prebuild in our workshops and then temporarily remove the batteries for transportation. The system was then relocated to site, positioned and the batteries installed and the system recommissioned.

The Client made a good job of the frame for the solar panels, having been provided with a drawing and specification by the guys and girls in the Design Team in the office (thanks, Laura and Kieron) and we were able to install and wire up the panels. That reduced onsite time to a day.

The system will provide power to juvenile tanks for locally grown oysters, providing them with fresh water and oxygen, and when required a little extra warmth…

More projects for offgrid energy systems for aquaculture

In the second system for which we have just completed the design, we will be supporting a Scottish University with their research. They are seeking funding to carry out a project on one of our main river systems.

A containerised system will be built because they do not own the land on which the system will be installed, so being able to install it for the period of the project and then remove it with limited impact on the landscape is important. And of course it will then be available for use on the next similar project.

Of interest on this job is that the system has to be resistant to flooding, which led to a bit of head scratching. But, containers are versatile things (floating is one of the things they can do!) and so we were able to use a combination of creative thinking with pre-existing equipment to come up with a solution. A “jack leg container”.

We wish the Client well in the funding round and hopefully our design will shortly have an opportunity to be realised later in the summer.
