How Kilchoman Distillery Cut Costs with Renewable Energy

Kilchoman Distillery cut costs with renewable energy: Proterra Energy case study 2025

After 4 years, our client is delighted that they’ve cut costs with renewable systems installed by Proterra Energy

Work is nearly always reflective of life in general, and so it is that some of the more exciting things we do are the hardest to achieve. And right now, just getting to Islay can be hard to achieve!

In our Kilchoman Distillery case study, we talk about how over the last 4 years we have installed over 100kW of generation, battery storage and energy management for the distillery and the journey we have both been on.

It has been an honest journey:

  • They are keen to improve their green credentials, but not at any cost. They, like us, are a business and we have to be profitable enterprises to survive, to reinvest in our businesses;
  • It had to be shown to work before we were allowed to talk about it specifically, hence the time embargo in terms of publicising the works, i.e. they have seen in real terms the actual generation and savings.

The case study will be interesting to any other business with high energy use and a desire to save money, produce your own power, and meet the net zero aspirations of your customers (and yourself). We’d be happy to hear from you to discuss how you too could cut costs with renewable energy!

The next phase of this project is energy resilience and we are at the drawing board stages, and with potential collaboration with a Glasgow based heating engineering firm we look forward (I think!) to the challenge.
